Answers:
What is Donateapc?
Donateapc is a free 'matchmaking' service for individuals
and organisations to donate their un-needed computers, printers,
scanners and other ICT equipment to a UK charity / not-for-profit
organisation.
It is primarily for those who only have one or two items
to donate and / or for people who can not find a recycling
organisation to take their unwanted equipment. (If you have
a significant number of unwanted items then it is far more
effective for you and the recipients to use a recognised recycling
organisation. You can find a comprehensive list at IT
For Charities.)
Donateapc is not a charity itself; rather it is simply a
free service to help UK non-profits and the environment. (Click
here to see who runs the site.)
|
What's the difference between Donateapc and other recycling
organisations?
Donateapc is not a recycling organisation and is not trying
to replace any existing organisations who recycle computers.
They do a fantastic job and in an ideal world they are the
best way to recycle IT equipment. But (a) many of these organisations
cannot collect or accept one or two computers from individual
donors, and/or (b) some people find that there is no such
recycling organisation near them. These are the people who
Donateapc is for.

Who runs Donatepc?
Click to find out about
us.
|
Do you arrange delivery of the PCs?
No. Donateapc simply provides this web site as a free service.
It is up to the donors and donees to arrange for delivery
/ collection of the items.
|
Do you accept PCs yourselves?
No. Donateapc simply provides this site to put donors and
donees together.
|
What should I do if, for example, someone requests that
I pay for delivery or, say, they are not based in the UK?
Please ignore the request. This goes against
the terms of the site. If the requester persists then please
contact us with the their details.
|
I am disabled and a donated computer
would be of great benefit to me. Although I am not a charity
can I legitimately make contact with donors to request
a donation?
Yes. But if you do so we would ask you to either:
a) get a non-profit organisation
that you may be associated with (due to your disability)
to either claim on your behalf
or back up your claim
or
b) supply the donor with copy of proof of your disability
(for example a faxed disability registration card)

I want to report an inappropriate posting
here to send us an email giving full details. Thank you.

How do I donate some equipment?
1) Just click on the 'Add Items to List' button on the home
page. Fill in the form and click 'Submit'. (Note, to act as
a password you'll be asked to enter the name of your first
school .... only you can then later remove the item)
Your item will then be added to the list.
2) When an organisation contacts you it is up to the two of
you to arrange for the delivery / collection of the equipment.
3) Once donated please return to this site and click on the
'Remove From List' button next to your item. (When you do
this you will be asked to confirm your first school.)
Please note: If you've never donated equipment before then
we recommend that you review the following article: What
to consider before donating hardware.
|
What sort of equipment can I donate?
ICT hardware: PCs, Macs, servers, laptops, printers, scanners,
digital cameras, hubs, PDAs, UPS, even fax machines, photocopiers
or data projectors. But not software. Thank
you.
And please consider:
- Is it a 'reasonably' recent machine? (ie Pentium
PC or equivalent)
If not, then far fewer non-profits will
want
it.
We have also found that
- BBC/Acorn computers
- 386 PCs and
- dot matrix printers
are not generally required so we prefer donors not to
post such items.
- Is the item in working order? If not we would prefer such
items are not posted. Most non-profits just don't have the
time or resources to repair or manage broken items.
If you're donating a PC then do read What
to consider before donating hardware.

I accidentally entered incorrect details on my item -
what do I do?!
If you've added an item to the list and you entered the
wrong phone number, email, description etc, then just
to send us an e-mail with the correct information and we will
update it for you. (In the future, we hope to give donors
the ability to edit their own details).
|
I want to remove my item from the list but I've forgotten
the name of the school I entered
No problem - Just
here to send us an e-mail and we'll remove it for you.
|
I have a number of PCs I want to donate - can I do that
on Donateapc?
If you have a lot of PCs which you want to donate then Donateapc
recommends that you do so through a recognised recycling service.
There are many throughout the UK. Visit IT
For Charities to find one near you.
|
How can I be sure that an applicant is a bona fide not-for-profit
organisation?
Some not-for-profit organisations will not necessarily have
charitable status ....e.g. youth clubs, educational establishments,
friendly housing societies etc. In such cases you might have
to make a judgment or say no.
If the organisation is a registered charity the simplest
way to check would probably be to ask the organisation for
their Registered Charity Number. Alternatively, (or additionally
if you want to check whether they are giving you a valid number)
you can also check for any organisation on the Charity Commission's
web site: http://www.charitycommission.gov.uk
|
How does it work if my non-profit would like to receive
a donated PC?
Look at the list of items available for donation and if
you see one you are interested in then click on the item
name for more details and the donor's name and contact
details. Contact the donor and discuss your interest in
the item. If you both decide it is right for you then you
should arrange for delivery / collection.
And do note: If you've never received donated equipment before then we
recommend that you review the following article: What
to consider before accepting donated hardware
